English Estates: Dunhill Cumberland (5101) (2013) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-33894
As iconic as their "03" straight Billiard, Dunhill's "01" Apple is a classic English shape and a stalwart example on the marque's pipe chart. More so than its Billiard brethren, this piece presents a touch more muscularity and curves through the bowl, prompting a more substantial feel in hand. This particular Group 5 offering presents a slender shank-and-stem combination, the consistently tapering duo throwing much of the visual weight forward to the Cumberland-finished bowl.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."-Truett Smith
