English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar Quaint (5) (2008) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-34044
With its curvy, sleek downturned stem and towering bowl, this Acorn shape from Dunhill won't be found on their standard pipe chart. Like all Quaints, it's more individualized in design, with a gestural, organic disposition. Rendered in Group 5 size, this piece is dressed in the dark, crisp sandblast of the Shell Briar finish and adorned with an elegant silver band for a dress pipe aesthetic.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.--Zach Podl
