Though we can't pinpoint exactly when this Billiard was crafted, we can say that it was likely crafted between 1949 and 1979, as that was the time period during which Dunhill stamped its Dead Root pipes with letter grades. As a vintage Dead Root, this pipe already boasts an impressive provenance, but that is elevated by this pipe's impressive grading of "G," representative of the incredible grain which the stummel displays. Shape-wise, this is a sleek, trim rendition of the Billiard, complete with an oval-shaped shank-and-stem combination that place further emphasis on the bowl. Said bowl takes on a gentle forward cant, lending the outline a bit of dynamism, and its softly rounded, bulb-like build offers a comfortable feel in hand. The light weight here ensures easy carry and a reliable clench, while the expert shaping of the stummel reveals dense streaks of flame and straight grain through the bowl.

Dunhill's "DR" designation on certain Root Briars signifies a special class of pipes: Dead Root. Like all Root Briars, these pieces maintain flawless briar, but with especially choice grain on display. Before the Root Briar line's introduction in 1931, "DR" was stamped on Bruyere pipes that showed handsome grain, but Dunhill wanted a more grain-defining finish, leading to the creation of the Root Briar.
