English Estates: Dunhill Cumberland (4101) (2014) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-34455
Simple and neat, with no need for adornments, this "01" classic Apple shape from Dunhill is eye-catching, its streamlined form rendered in Group 4 size. The bowl is pleasingly plump but not exaggerated, and it contains plenty of chamber capacity. Likewise, the round shank and elegantly tapered mouthpiece are a bit muscular, yet well balanced. Dressed in the Cumberland sandblast, this pipe boasts handsome grain throughout the stummel.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."--Davin Hylton
