English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (R) (4) (S) (1961) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-002-35427

Dated to 1961, this Pot from Dunhill is rendered in Group 4 size, putting it at the larger end of the spectrum. The bowl stands firm and upright, formed by thick, straight walls traveling from the heel to a flat rim. A slender shank transitions from the bowl and joins a tapering stem of jet-black vulcanite. Additionally, the stummel's flattened underside allows this pipe to sit comfortably on level surfaces. Completing this pipe's vintage look is Dunhill's iconic Shell Briar finish adorning the stummel, granting it a dark, rugged complexion.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
