English Estates: Dunhill Cumberland (4103) (2016) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe

Rendered in Group 4 size, this "03" epitomizes the classic Billiard with its balanced proportions. The bowl stands firm and upright, formed by straight walls reaching from the heel toward the rim. Transitioning from the bowl is an oval shank that pairs to a gradually tapering stem. Additionally, the stummel features a flattened underside, which allows this pipe to sit comfortably on level surfaces. Courtesy of Dunhill's Cumberland finish, the stummel wears a crisp, earthy sandblast that pairs handsomely with the swirling, warm tones of the finish's eponymous stem.

When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."
