English Estates: Dunhill Bruyere 75th Anniversary Billiard with Silver (A) (3) (1985) Tobacco Pipe

Crafted in 1985 for Dunhill's 75th Anniversary series, this Billiard was one of two designs offered in the series: a straight and bent Billiard. The shapes hearkened back to early 20th century pipe design with their more compact forms and use of sterling silver. Much of this pocketable disposition is owed to the abbreviated stem that's paired to the trim shank via a broad sterling silver band around the junction. The bowl is plump and pert, and the small footprint of this piece lends it a light weight that ensures easy clenching, despite being straight. It's only fitting that such a commemorative piece would wear the Bruyere finish, Dunhill's first, its deep stain reveling handsome grain and contrasting beautifully with its silver fitment.

The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.
