English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (2103) (1985) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-002-36823

Rendered in diminutive Group 2 size, this vintage "03" Billiard from Dunhill presents an iconic figure in lightweight, compact proportions. The bowl stands with an upright posture, its walls traveling straight up from the heel towards the rim. Accentuating the bowl's posture is the stummel's flattened underside, which allows this pipe to sit reliably on level surfaces. A proportionally balanced shank transitions from the bowl and pairs to a tapering stem of jet-black vulcanite. Dressing the stummel is Dunhill's time-honored Shell Briar finish, granting it a dark, rugged complexion.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
