English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (42263) (1980) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-002-36827

Presented in Group 4 size, this vintage "26" Hungarian is dated to 1980, with a bowl bearing a resemblance to the Egg. The bowl is tall and round, its walls housing a capacious chamber as they stretch high from the heel and curve gently towards the rim. A sturdy, fully bent shank makes a broad transition from the bowl and joins a bent saddle stem, its posture perfect for jaw-hanging comfort. Dunhill's iconic Shell Briar sandblast dresses the stummel, granting it a dark, rugged complexion.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
