English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar with Silver (4103) (1998) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-002-37271

Endowed with a softly curving bowl and displaying a proudly upright posture, this Group 4 Billiard by Dunhill presents a sleek and svelte shank-and-stem arrangement out back, resulting in a pleasant visual contrast. The ample curves of the bowl and the wide transition keep this pipe comfortable in hand while maintaining a fairly light weight, making this piece a practical smoker. This piece is dressed in the dark, inky sandblast of the Shell Briar finish, one which reveals handsome grain and is strikingly contrasted by a broad silver band at the shank end.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
