English Estates: Dunhill Shell (51033) (1981) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-002-37311

A robust Group 5 Billiard from Dunhill, this "51033" dates to 1981 and carries the old five-digit stamping that was later changed to the now-standard four-numbered shape chart system. The muscular aesthetic can be seen from the thick-walled, stout bowl through the transition and shank, which, together with the tapered vulcanite stem, boasts a pleasing proportional balance. This deep-chambered pipe is dressed in the dark Shell Briar sandblast, showing off the briar's natural grain patterns with aplomb.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
