English Estates: Dunhill Bruyere (LBS) (4) (A) (1960) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-37760
Stamped "LBS," this Group 4 piece is a more slender iteration of Dunhill's Large Billiards, though it still retains a robust physique. Introduced after the end of World War I, Dunhill's "LB" pipes are characterized by their more strapping proportions and subtly Apple-like bowls, as seen in this example from 1960. The bowl stands tall and upright, with supple walls reaching from heel to rim. A muscular, balanced shank transitions from the bowl and pairs to a gradually tapering stem, the latter of which lends this piece a sleek, streamlined profile. Courtesy of Dunhill's iconic Bruyere finish, the stummel wears a rich, smooth stain that accentuates the briar's natural grain.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.
