English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (463) (2) (S) (F/T) (1965) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-38078
Dated 1965, this Group 2-sized "463" Pot from Dunhill features a lean, lightweight physique that is ideal for a multitasking smoker. Sout and classically inclined, the bowl is formed by walls that reach from a paneled heel to a textured rim. The paneling of the heel reaches into the underside of the shank, allowing this piece to sit without a pipe stand. A slender shank reaches from the bowl out back and pairs to a tapering stem of black vulcanite that flares out towards the bit. Courtesy of Dunhill's Shell Briar finish, the stummel has a wealth of texture for the fingers to enjoy.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
