English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (838) (ODB) (F/T) (2001) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-38186
This "868" Bulldog from Dunhill boasts a stout, ridgeline-wrapped bowl that is paneled gently at the flanks. The Bulldog's characteristic diamond shank reaches from the bowl and pairs to a stem of black vulcanite, the shank's ridgelines follow into the stem's base, eventually dissipating at the bit. Dressing this piece is Dunhill's iconic dark Shell Briar sandblast, providing a wealth of texture for the finger to enjoy.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
