English Estates: Ashton Old Church Dublin (LX) (1998) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-38360
From the sheer visual weight of the bowl compared to the shank and stem, if I'd seen this piece at a glance, I probably would have assumed it was the work of some Italian artisan or workshop — the Italian neoclassic style in general being well-known for its use of visually heavy bowls. As you can see, it's actually an Ashton, fashioned back in 1998 during the Bill Taylor-era. The proudly poised, towering Dublin bowl and lengthy stretch of stem have lent it quite a striking silhouette in profile. Its chamber is generously deep and its flattened underside allows it to sit stably. The Old Church sandblast has unveiled an abundance of rich texture for your fingers to wander over as well as a fascinating mix of blasted birdseye and waves of grain that ripple across the bowl's flanks.
