English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (LBS) (4) (Aftermarket 14K Band) (1961) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-38546
Dated 1961, this vintage "LBS" Billiard by Dunhill is presented in Group 4 size, owing to its moderately hefty build. The bowl stands tall and transitions into a sturdy, evenly measured shank, giving this pipe a strong silhouette. The shank flows into a gradually tapering vulcanite stem at a 14k gold accent band. Completing the ensemble is Dunhill's illustrious Shell Briar finish, providing this Billiard with a rugged, timeless look. The 14k gold band mentioned above is an aftermarket addition, applied at the factory.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
