English Estates: Dunhill Tanshell (4216) (1986) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-38572
Dated 1986, this "16" bent Billiard from Dunhill offers a sinuous interpretation of the classic shape, featuring a cylindrical bowl set at the fore of an upturned shank-and-stem combination. Sized to Group 4 proportions, the bowl boasts a generous tobacco chamber, ideal for those who prefer a longer smoke. A tight transition gives the piece an active posture, flowing into a round shank that informs the base of the saddle stem out back. The stummel is finished in Dunhill's collectible Tanshell finish, bestowing a warm, earthy complexion to the composition.
Created in 1951, the Tanshell marked Dunhill's fourth finish behind the Bruyere (1910), Shell Briar (1917), and Root Briar (1931); however, Dunhill didn't complete the "Tanshell" stamp until December 1951, waiting until 1952 to actually introduce the first Tanshell pipes. Considered one of the English marque's rarest, most collectible finishes, the Tanshell boasts a concise sandblast but unlike the dark-stained Shell Briar, the Tanshell is naturally stained, intended to develop a warm patina as it darkens with prolonged use over time.
