English Estates: Dunhill Shell (5101) (F) (1985) (6mm) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-38802
Dunhill's "01" shape is the archetypal Apple, renowned for its round, curvaceous bowl. This particular example is rendered in Group 5 proportions, offering more heft and sturdiness than usual, yet it remains compact enough to be a perfect, reliable companion for any occasion. The transition is wide, leading into a straight, cylindrical shank that meets a tapering vulcanite stem. The bowl's defined forward cant emphasizes the bowl's bold shaping and adds a touch of dynamism to the overall form. It's dressed in Dunhill's dark Shell Briar finish and accented by two metallic bands.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
