English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (R) (F/T) (4) with 10mm 14K Gold Band (1964) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-38779
Dated to 1964, this vintage Group 4 pot from Dunhill features a broad, robust bowl standing at the fore with a slight forward cant, its figure formed by thick, straight walls rising from heel to rim. Lending a touch more visual weight to the front of the composition, a gently tapering shank and saddle stem pair to the bowl out back. A 14-karat gold band adorns the junction here for an elegant dose of flash, offering a bright contrast to Dunhill's iconic Shell Briar finish as it dresses the stummel here in a dark, rugged sandblast.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
