English Estates: GBD Unique Spot Carved Rhodesian (1960s-1980) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-38688
Forged in Paris in 1850 by three men looking to make new strides for the pipe industry, GBD was the brainchild of Ganneval, Bondier, and Donninger. Initially specializing in meerschaum pipes, GBD won 15 medals of achievement within its first 40 years. These awards set the stage for the company's success in Europe, Canada, South Africa, Australia, and the U.S.A. Eventually, in 1902, the company was sold to A. Oppenheimer & Co., which brought the business to England. Crafted between the 1960s and 1980s, this Rhodesian From GBD is an interesting take on the classic silhouette. A lifted and concave underside stretches from the heel almost all the way through the shank, allowing the pipe to sit, or rather, rock. The remainder of the pipe is fairly traditional, with a timeless Rhodesian bowl married to a gradually tapering shank-and-stem combination out back. Spot carving along the bottom half of the bowl adds unique detail and textural contrast to the otherwise sleek design.
