English Estates: Charatan's Make Selected Bent Dublin (Extra Large) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-39257
The Charatan brand, founded in 1863 by Frederick Charatan, was the first to make briar pipes completely by hand. To differentiate this process from that of other brands, who put pipes together from pre-made parts, the nomenclature "Charatan's Make" was coined. With a square-shaped shank and stem paired to a round bowl, this bent Dublin from Charatan is a superb example of a skilled blending of curves and angles. The transition seamlessly blends the circular cross-section of the bowl into the shank's polygonal shape. Square shoulders mark the beginning of the stem as it grows out of the stummel's aft, and two inward steps through the gentle arc of the mouthpiece bring us to the bit. The pipe rests upright atop the flat feel, with the flame grain guiding the eyes up the height of the flared bowl to a softly inflated rim decorated with finely detailed eddies of birdseye. Dressed in a smooth finish, the stummel is stained the color of walnut wood.
