French Estates: Gitana DePose Smooth Paneled Billiard Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-003-2280
We were able to ascertain a little information about La Gitana, which was a French brand created by Chapel Frés. Observing this briar in silhouette might have some tempted to call it an Apple, as paneled Billiard renditions tend to sport a more crisp, firm-lined form and defined geometry. There's still some curve sported by the flanks here, particularly at the heel, accentuated by the four paneled corners. There are a few fills, as well as some faint scratches around the bowl, but this relic from the early 20th century still sports its original horn stem, coupled with a novel aluminum tenon arrangement that we can only assume is meant to trap moisture. Although we aren't sure how well it achieves this, it does do quite well at looking like an old-school James Bond accessory. It fits securely within a cork-lined mortise, which many briars of this period tended to have.
