German Estates: Jurgen Moritz Smooth Fish (2008) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-005-4473

Adam Davidson, who first met Jurgen Moritz at the 2009 Chicago show (and says he was both very nice to talk with, and very easy to spot as a European) describes this shape as a "very squat Tomato-Blowfish." To my eye, I'd say the Tomato is definitely the dominating part of that mix: this is one broad number, and the Blowfish-ness comes about largely through some subtle asymmetry, and a just-barely implied paneling of the right flank of the bowl via the continuation of a shank-edge up through to the rim. Light, quick flame bands the circumference of the bowl and runs along the edges of the modified teardrop shank (both broader and much more symmetrical than your usual Ivarsson-style teardrop), but the real show is the birdseye — acres of it. Condition is very good, too.
