German Estates: Rainer Barbi Smooth Billiard (1980s)

Product Number: 004-005-4821

Considered a beloved staple of German pipemaking and artisan pipemaking in general, Rainer Barbi passed away in 2011, leaving a swath of gorgeous, artisan pipes as his legacy. His style consisted primarily of classic, Danish-style shapes, flowing numbers with loads of supple, organic charm. This Barbi Billiard here is a stunning representation of his work — it showcases a smooth, streamlined profile and svelte proportions throughout, while still boasting plenty of chamber. The shaping here is spot on, as the bowl tapers consistently to the rim and cants slightly forward to balance out the lines in profile. The grain is perfect too, tight tongues of flame grain striate the bowl with birdseye along the heel and arrow straight bands of cross grain at the shank's flanks. Made sometime between 1981 and '86, this is vintage piece from a premier pipemaker, and condition is still good, though there's some minor rim darkening and wear and over-buffing at the stem.
