German Estates: Rainer Barbi Smooth Bent Egg (AA) (2001)
Product Number: 004-005-4907
When one thinks of historically significant pipemaking communities, Germany isn't one of the first countries to come to mind — at least when compared to England, France, and Denmark. However, when one considers influential artisan pipemakers, Rainer Barbi makes the list every time. He represents the pinnacle of German pipemaking, with many of today's carvers revering and looking to Barbi's work for inspiration and influence. A decade before his unfortunate passing in 2011, Rainer fashioned this bent Egg. Sweeping of S-curve and slender of shank and stem, the majority of the piece's visual weight is at the bowl: Here, Barbi continued the curvaceous flow of the shank and stem, curling the top of the bowl forward in a more playful style of forward cant that follows the grain beautifully.-Truett Smith
