German Estates: Rainer Barbi Smooth Tomato (1981-1987)

Product Number: 004-005-5094

Well-defined transitions and a pronounced difference in breadth between a briar's shank and its bowl's "cheeks" are typical design cues of Rainer Barbi pipes, and here we find a fine example of the late German master's use of them. What made these Barbi cues so special wasn't simply that he used them, but that he used them so well, creating a great distinction between what is bowl and what is shank, while still crafting shapes that, overall, struck the eye as a perfectly natural, unified whole. And this Tomato, one with, for all its shapeliness, some seriously lovely flow.
