German Estates: Rainer Barbi Smooth Paneled Billiard with Horn (BA) (109) (1987-1992)

Product Number: 004-005-5099

Based on the stamping, this pipe from Rainer Barbi was fashioned sometime between 1987 and 1992. The German artisan's portfolio was often marked by rounded, voluptuous shapes, making this crisp-lined and faceted Billiard an eye-catching and collectible outlier, while also proving Barbi's diverse shaping acumen. The panels of the shank extend into the bowl's heel for an even more architectural aesthetic, calling to mind the signature style of Poul Ilsted, who was known for paneled designs. In this Barbi piece, such faceted shaping highlights the best of this briar's grain orientation presented in a warm stain with a pale, creamy band of horn adorning the stem's base, also shaped to perfectly match the shank's firm ridgelines.
