German Estates: Cornelius Mänz Smooth Bent Apple with Bamboo (2018) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-005-5120
The work of Cornelius Mänz often combines the graceful lines of the Danish school with Japanese organicism and the German carver's deft and subtle use of asymmetry. That's all apparent in this bulbous bent Apple offering. The use of two knuckles of Japanese bamboo offers an obvious organic aesthetic, the rhythm of the knuckles maintained by the saddle portion of the stem as well as the rounded, protruding heel. The heel, though, is slightly off center in relation to the shank's implied line, echoed up top at the subtly asymmetrical array of plateau at the rim. Long, lean, and slender, the streamlined shank and stem combination emphasizes the voluptuous nature of the bowl, which is adorned in stunning straight grain. It's all dressed in a honey-blonde stain, pairing handsomely with the muted, yellow tones of the bamboo for a gorgeously vibrant presentation.
