German Estates: Rainer Barbi Smooth Bent Brandy (793) (1987-1992)

Product Number: 004-005-5116

A sleek, stately Brandy from German master Rainer Barbi, this rendition shows his particular style of soft muscularity, a gentle structure that is immediately recognizable from across the room as his work. The bowl stands upright with a demure taper to a well-defined base, rounding just slightly on the underside, and paired to a low-slung oval shank. The stem is a long taper of vulcanite, with a lighter accent of hardwood near its base and just enough downturn to qualify this otherwise straight pipe as a bent rendition. A warm traditional stain and smooth finish accentuate excellent vertical grain, with flames sweeping in uniform concert up the sides of the bowl. A decade after the legendary craftsman passed in 2011, and his pipes still live on as a tribute to both the quality of his work and the high collectibility of it.
