German Estates: Rainer Barbi Smooth Brandy with Horn (c.1980s)
Product Number: 004-005-5117
A beloved member of German pipe making and of artisan pipe making in general, Rainer Barbi passed away in 2011, leaving a swath of gorgeous, artisan pipes as his legacy. His style consisted primarily of classic, Danish-style shapes, flowing numbers with loads of supple, organic charm. This Barbi Brandy is a stunning representation of his work: It showcases a smooth, streamlined profile and svelte proportions throughout, while still boasting plenty of chamber and a fairly substantial bowl. The shaping here is spot on, as the bowl tapers consistently to the rim and cants slightly forward to balance out the lines in profile. Dressed in a warm, auburn stain, it's paired to a cumberland stem for a complementary color palette and accented by a creamy horn band. Likely made sometime in the 1980s, this is a collectible piece from a premier pipe maker.-Truett Smith
