German Estates: Rainer Barbi Sandblasted Bent Brandy with Bone (ND) (BA) (2000)
Product Number: 004-005-5189
Rainer Barbi's stylistic range was impressive as the late German carver was as comfortable with hearty, robust designs as he was with lithe and sinuous presentations such as the Brandy featured here. This piece was carved in 2000, and demonstrates the timeless quality of the artisan's work. The canted Brandy bowl features a firm ridgeline along its base for tactile stimulation as well as visual interest and admiration. The transition is well defined, permitting the bowl to maintain an independent stature as it rises from the long and slender, softly curved shank, a curve that is inversely repeated with the downturned, tapered mouthpiece. The shank diminishes in diameter with careful nuance, revealing a taper that continues into the stem. Excellent grain has been unveiled by Barbi's sandblasting technique, with undulating growth rings cascading down the tall bowl's flanks. A warm stain adds definition to the grain, with a bone accent band complementing the stummel's hue. Despite its slenderized design, it's a large pipe with plenty of presence and artistic appeal.- Chuck Stanion
