German Estates: Rainer Barbi Smooth Rhodesian with Boxwood (RF) (B) (2002)
Product Number: 004-005-5193
While we've seen a good number of Rainer Barbi pipes here at Smokingpipes, there have been few Rhodesians coming our way; this is only the fourth in the last 10 years. An uncommon and welcome addition, then, this piece from the late German artisan is quite collectible. Rainer was a master pipe maker with a solid eye for shaping the briar to best show off the grain. The broad bowl is adorned with a single, encircling beadline beneath the delicately tapered, domed rim, while a lithe, sinuously bent shank and stem gracefully add support to the bowl's muscularity. The dramatically disparate proportions between bowl and shank reflect Italian neoclassic shaping with the softened lines and voluptuous disposition bring to mind Danish design. As previously mentioned, the grain is simply stunning: birdseye populates the rim and base, with dense, fiery licks of flame ascending the bowl. It's illuminated by a honey-blonde stain with a pale band of boxwood on the ebony-hued mouthpiece lending a complementing, organic accent.-Angela Robertson
