German Estates: Rainer Barbi Smooth Bent Pot with Horn (BA) (894) (1987-1992)

Product Number: 004-005-5231

Based on the "894" stamping, this pipe from Rainer Barbi was likely fashioned in August of 1994. The German artisan's shaping style often catered to curvaceous, voluptuous designs, but he also enjoyed crafting crisp-lined and faceted forms like this bent Pot rendition. The shank and stem display a slight S-curve in profile, and the panels of the shank extend into the bowl's heel for an architectural aesthetic that calls to mind the characteristics of a Bulldog. Furthering that Bulldog motif, the bowl is wrapped with twin beadlines but forgoes that design's tapers above and below, and the shank is paneled hexagonally instead of in a diamond. Such faceted shaping highlights the best of this briar's grain orientation presented in a warm stain, which is accented by a generous band of creamy horn.
