German Estates: Rainer Barbi Smooth Lovat (BB) (092) (1987-1992)
Product Number: 004-005-5232
The most famous of German carvers in his day, Rainer Barbi passed in 2011, leaving behind a vast portfolio of his creative and wonderfully executed artisan compositions. This Lovat is among his most traditional, though it possesses Barbi's modifications in form and line. It's a robustly proportioned interpretation, with the round shank continuing the bowl's heartiness as it leads into the saddle stem. The heel is lifting, enhancing the organic style of the bowl, which rises in shapely contours and tall stature to the rim. The cross-grain orientation of the bowl places birdseye along the sides and horizontal streaks of grain fore and aft, while the amber-hued mouthpiece vibrantly contrasts the stummel's reserved, mahogany stain. Condition-wise, it should be noted that there's a tiny crack on the button in the stem material, though it won't cause any issues or worsen when this piece is smoked.- Chuck Stanion
