German Estates: Rainer Barbi Smooth Bent Apple (B) (VJ) (2006)
Product Number: 004-005-5261
Typical of Rainer Barbi's personal shaping style, this bent Apple exudes an elegantly flowing sense of curve and line, with the bowl notably marked by plump roundness. In this example that bowl cants forward, continuing the momentum initiated by the ever-so-slightly curving shank-and-stem combination, and the rim flares subtly just before the chamber, creating an organic, bulb-like aesthetic. The heel is more flat and lifted than would otherwise be expected on a voluptuous Apple design, but such a design choice adds dynamism to the composition, accentuating the forward momentum. A mahogany stain highlights the briar's natural grain patterns, and the stem base is elevated by a dual-toned, hardwood accent.-Truett Smith
