Irish Estates: Peterson Castle Rusticated "Birr" (Fishtail) (2011) (Unsmoked)

Product Number: 004-004-1971

A stalwart 17th century structure (presently home to the 7th Earl of Rosse) the current Birr Castle was built on the site of the original, 12th century castle's gatehouse. Much of it is open to the public today, including its magnificent gardens, what is believed to be the oldest surviving photographic darkroom (originally built for the mother of the 4th Earl of Rosse), and perhaps its most famous feature, the "Leviathan of Parsonstown", which remained the world's largest telescope from 1845 to 1917. The solid, stolid shaping of the Peterson Birr seems well suited given its namesake's lasting fame and enduring presence.
