Irish Estates: Peterson Sherlock Holmes Hudson Smooth (Fishtail) (1994) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-004-2417
It's nice to see that even more minor characters get their due, in Peterson's Sherlock Holmes series; this "Hudson" piece deriving its namesake from the "long-suffering" landlady of the house on 221B Baker Street, in which Holmes lives. Obsessively clean and tidy, and to paraphrase Watson "a very good cook" (though Holmes would say "Her cuisine is a little limited, but she has as good an idea of breakfast as a Scotchwoman"), Mrs. Hudson stood in the deepest awe of Sherlock over the course of his adventures, but never dared to interfere with his work, however outrageous or unconventional they may have seemed. In a rather novel take on the quarter-Bent Bulldog, at least for many pipe makers, this stout and sturdily proportioned number communicates a sense of dynamism in the forward yearning of its bowl and the streamlined trailing of the shank and stem, perhaps characterizing Hudson's inwardly nervous state of mind.
