Italian Estates: Mastro de Paja Rusticated Bent Rhodesian
Product Number: 004-006-9450
The Rhodesian is a shape definition pipemakers often take creative liberty with, creating a myriad of compositions that bear little resemblance to the original Bulldog variant, beyond having a rounded shank and a bead-line or two somewhere on the bowl. That is exactly the case with this particular example: broad-rimmed, and highly perched, it neatly tapers down to an easy-flowing shank and stem transition - a Rhodesian design that blends in elements of the Calabash, with a gesture seen in some Dublin variations. Mastro de Paja definitely took liberties here, but not without producing a shape that still appears as natural and well-balanced as the timeless canonical shape.
