Italian Estates: Becker Sandblasted Cherrywood (Two Clubs) (G) (2011)

Product Number: 004-006-9872

We are along way from Fritz Becker's influence here. a LONG way. This is his son Paolo's style in full bloom: a HIGHLY sculptural Cherrywood, playing a masterful game of proportions and unique shaping, utterly resulting in optical illusions. In profile, the piece fools you into believing it's quite a large, cylindrical, hunk of briar - but one slight turn in vantage reveals an flattened eye shape, somewhat reminiscent of the scarce "Opera" shape (though lacking its similarly shaped chamber and portability). This is a shape Becker has only hinted at in his career - lightly toying with various Cherrywood and Poker designs - but never quite pushing them over the edge, until now; however, the deep blast and black stain are classic conceptual tactics, for the artisan, employed to alleviate distraction by focusing the attention on the form itself.
