Italian Estates: Gabriele Smooth Bent Dublin with Bamboo (Nautilus)
Product Number: 004-006-29708
A brilliant example of Gabriele dal Fiume's penchant for merging playful energy with muscular shaping, this bent Dublin shape presents a lively form, imbued with stout, insulating walls. The broad rim displays a slight concave orientation and is separated from the rest of the bowl by a crisp ridgeline. That ridgeline has been expertly used on this piece to showcase the gorgeous grain the Italian carver has managed to extract from this briar block. Incredibly tight streaks of flame grain rise in concert with the bowl's flare, with the rim's ridgeline framing a hypnotic display of birdseye. The light contrast stain ably illuminates the striking grain while two knuckles of pale bamboo extend the shank, with the bamboo's bumpy nodes adding visual and physical texture. Simply a stunning piece from the Italian artisan and more than worthy of his prestigious Nautilus stamp — Gabriele's highest designation.- Jeffery Sitts
