Italian Estates: Gabriele Smooth Bent Dublin (Nautilus)
Product Number: 004-006-29691
Gabriele Dal Fiume is the man behind Gabriele pipes. Producing only 60-80 pipes per year, all of them hand-carved, allows him the time needed to devote all his creativity and craftsmanship into each piece. Nowhere is that better seen than in this bent Dublin, given the Nautilus grading — Gabriele's highest. Featuring the flared bowl of a Dublin, topped with an undulating rim, and mixed with the transition of a Horn, this seemingly aquatic-inspired piece flows effortlessly from bit to rim, yet still displays a firmness via the ridges that run up either flank. Tying the whole piece together is its grain, which is quite simply stunning: birdseye completely saturates the bowl's fore, while tongues of flame grain begin at each flank's ridge, then streak symmetrically on either side towards the bowl's aft. In this way ,the grain perfectly suits the shape, a shape that has been expertly crafted by a skilled artisan.
