Italian Estates: Castello Trademark Bent Dublin (1986) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-006-31925
Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello has arguably become the most iconic and revered workshop in the Italian pipe making world, being the first to take an artisanal approach to what had henceforth been a factory-oriented enterprise, successfully competing with famed marques such as Dunhill, Sasieni, and Charatan's. This hands-on approach to crafting pieces has resulted in work such as this, a bent Dublin from the Italian workshop's Trademark line. This pipe, likely made in 1986, judging by the stamping, is a compact and jaunty rendition of the classic shape, the slender stem flaring into the ovoid shank, a small faux diamond near the base providing a degree of flash to the black acrylic. The shank flares as it reaches for the transition, sharply angling upward in an acute angle and curving backward as it does, meeting the rim swiftly, the softness of the bowl's flare juxtaposed by the suddenness of the transition. The heel, as well, is quite pointed, only moderately pronounced, overshadowed by the bowl that sits upon it, the gentle flare toward the rim terminating in an undulating surface, marked by a firm ridgeline. The stummel is dressed in a warm mahogany stain, the glossy finish displaying a lovely cross grain structure, with swirling clouds of birdseye gracing both flanks.-John McElheny
