Castello bent Bulldogs differ in design, and this version features a tall, seemingly protruding bowl, replete with subtle beadlines at the high waist, above which is a tapering dome that reaches toward a flattened rim. The shank and stem also differ from some of the Italian workshop's other bent Bulldogs, with this presentation displaying an extremely understated curvature about the combination, the pairing taking on a consistent taper as the shank lifts gently out of the transition. This piece is part of Castello's unique Pi series, which dresses the stummel in a dual finish that sees the bowl covered in a smooth, vibrant auburn stain. The shank and transitional area, however, have been treated with a stimulating rustication that adds a rich diversity of textures, keeping the composition intriguing.
