Italian Estates: Radice Silk Cut Collect Freehand (2016) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-006-38870

Luigi Radice was born in 1939 and began his career working with briar in 1961, finding employment at the venerable Castello workshop. While working for the now legendary brand, Luigi met Giuseppe Ascorti, and the two left together in 1968 to found Caminetto, where he stayed for 12 years, before departing to establish Radice in 1980. With help from his son, Gianluca, and his father, Paolo, Luigi began producing pipes in a striking neoclassical style which quickly amassed acclaim from enthusiasts of such stylized works. Luigi was later joined by his other son, Marzio, and the family-run workshop has since become known not just for their unique take on the neoclassical style of pipe making, but their singular accenting and finishing techniques. This Freehand piece stands out even among Radice's most stylized pipes, with a flaring, Dublin-like bowl sat atop a rounded heel at the fore of the stummel and a transition that takes the form of a briar loop which curves from the aft of the rim into the top of the shank. This loop provides an easy space for resting a digit, wide enough to accommodate any finger, and it marks the start of the trim, tapering shank's travel toward a cumberland stem. Dressed in a crisp, auburn-tinged sandblast and showcasing a wealth of handsome grain, with the interior of the transition's loop finished in a light, smooth stain.
