To see a Castello 287 "Large 3/4 to full fancy Poker", in and of itself, is a bit of a rarity. To see one as an Occhio di Pernice grade as an estate? Until I saw this pipe, I would have though "impossible" (and, frankly, still hold on to "improbable") From 1947, until 1980, this stunning pipe would have been called simply "Collection". In 1980 it was decided to differentiate the Collection pipes that sported exemplary birdseye with the "Collection Occhio di Pernice" stamp. The cross cut grain on the rim, top of the shank, as well as the front and back of the bowl is quite fine, but really doesn't give you sufficient preparation for the birdseye on the remainder of the bowl. Stunning!
