Italian Estates: Castello Collection Fiammata Bent Billiard (K) (2009) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-006-39523

Italian workshop Castello has a rich history that stretches back to 1947 with its founding by Carlo Scotti, being established as one of the first Italian brands to offer high-quality handmade pipes to the general public. In the 1960s, following the addition of Luigi Radice and Peppino Ascorti to their team of carvers, Castello's pipes began to take on a form that was quite different from the Anglo-French classics that they and others had been producing. The Italian neoclassical style which they had begun to develop led not only to a shaping renaissance within Italy, but the production of a number of now iconic profiles. A more reserved rendition from Castello, this bent Billiard pairs an upright bowl to an arcing shank and stem that then turns down at the bit, the slightly aquiline curve bringing to mind the Hawkbill design. The shank-and-stem combination is a compressed ovoid that slenderizes the composition a great deal in profile, while maintaining a more muscular look from the smoker's perspective. A handsomely shaped pipe, it's dressed in the workshop's Collection finish, the warm, light stain revealing stunning flame grain so well developed that this pipe has earned the vaunted "Fiammata" designation.
