Italian Estates: Ardor Mercurio Fantasy Freehand Sitter (Dorelio Rovera) (2010) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-006-40344

Though the Ardor pipes workshop was founded in 1974 by father-son team Angelo and Dorelio Rovera, the pipe making history of the family stretches back to 1911, with the founding of Sociedade Rovera in Varese, Italy. It was at here that Angelo began to carve pipes alongside his father and uncles, starting at the age of 13 in 1958, Ardor's debut into the pipe world marked by a high-standard of craftsmanship that's remained consistent for nearly five decades. Though Angelo passed away in 1999, Ardor is now run by Dorelio, alongside both Damiano and Dimitri, the next generation of Roveras. Ardor's pipes are often typified by their strikingly neoclassical proportions, with each piece offering greatly enhanced substance about the bowl and a reassuring presence in hand. It's not exactly common to receive Freehand pieces from Ardor, though especially not pieces like this one, a pipe which displays defined elements of more classic shaping alongside playfully neoclassical design aspects. The most prevalent of the latter is the presence of the stem, as it lifts and curls out of a rather tight transition and flares out, its face surrounded by a firm ridge that continues through both sides of the shank and lines the underside. The underside of this pipe features a flat panel, a continuation of the shank's aft side line, which allows for stable sitting and supports the plump walls of the bowl. Said bowl takes on a slight forward cant as it grows its walls with ample curvature up toward a chamfered rim, the feel in hand comfortable. Dressed in the warm stain of the Mercurio series, the stummel here showcases a truly impressive display of grain, with vast plains of birdseye across both flanks of the briar and wrapping cross grain through the midsection.
