Italian Estates: Moretti Smooth Bent Egg (2) (2012) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-006-41489

Igino Moretti founded the Moretti Recanati brand in 1968 in Recanati, Italy, a small town with a rich pipe making history that stretches back to 1850. Igino actually worked for one of the town's largest pipe factories, before financial pressures stemming from World War 2 forced them to close in 1950. After many years, Igino handed off control of production to his son-in-law Marco Biagini, who has diversified the design principles of the workshop to include the classic profiles of Anglo-French manufacturers and Danish carvers. This bent Egg is a demurely stylized pipe from the brand, its silhouette defined by a gentle sinuousness and an understated S-curve that lends this piece a gracile character. The transition is wide, leading into a short, lifted shank that meets a comparatively lengthy stem of vibrant, amber-tinged acrylic. The pairing at the aft offers a comfortable smoking posture and balances the presence of the bowl well, with said bowl standing atop a rounded heel and possessed of softly curving, supple walls. These walls are soft in hand and taper neatly toward the chamfered rim, giving plenty of space to showcase the stummel's warm, light stain and the handsome grain it reveals.
