Italian Estates: Castello Sea Rock Briar Poker (SC) (88) (1950s-1960s) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-006-41709

Italian workshop Castello has a rich history that stretches back to 1947 with its founding by Carlo Scotti, being established as one of the first Italian brands to offer high-quality handmade pipes to the general public. In the 1960s, following the addition of Luigi Radice and Peppino Ascorti to their team of carvers, Castello's pipes began to take on a form that was quite different from the Anglo-French classics that they and others had been producing. The Italian neoclassical style which they had begun to develop led not only to a shaping renaissance within Italy, but the production of a number of now-iconic profiles. The Poker is a shape already given to neoclassical leanings, given the impressive focus placed on the bowl, and this iteration of the shape does well to showcase and enhance these leanings. The transition is wide, with plenty of room to drape a digit, and it gives way to a shank with a downward trajectory that's met with a stylized and demurely downturned saddle stem of dark acrylic: one that showcases three plump expansion rings at the base. Up front, the bowl stands atop a flat heel, supporting gently flaring walls that expand out as they rise to a flat rim, the relative slenderness of the shank and stem drawing the eye toward the bowl. Dressed in a dark stain and the craggy rustication of Castello's Sea Rock rustication, this pipe is even more charming thanks to its vintage, being made between the 1950s and 1960s.
