Italian Estates: Ardor Venere Smooth Bent Billiard (Dorelio Rovera) (2P) (2007) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-006-41916

Though the Ardor pipes workshop was founded in 1974 by father-son team Angelo and Dorelio Rovera, the pipe-making history of the family stretches back to 1911, with the founding of Sociedade Rovera in Varese, Italy. It was here that Angelo began to carve pipes alongside his father and uncles, starting at the age of 13 in 1958, Ardor's debut into the pipe world was marked by a high standard of craftsmanship that's remained consistent for nearly five decades. Though Angelo passed away in 1999, Ardor is now run by Dorelio, alongside both Damiano and Dimitri, the next generation of Roveras. Ardor's pipes are often typified by their strikingly neoclassical proportions, with each piece offering greatly enhanced substance about the bowl and a reassuring presence in hand. This bent Billiard is something of a rarity from the Italian workshop, being part of the Venere series, and it is further distinguished by its "2P," or Due Punti stamping. Meaning "two points" in English, the Due Punti line represents Ardor's highest tier of finish and is defined by a light, natural stain and twin inlaid accents on the stem, found dressing only those pipes that feature flawless grain and shaping. Compared to many other Ardor pipes, this piece is of a rather reserved style, boasting a sleekly tapering shank and stem combination that's demurely downturned at the bit, working well with the shank's understated lift out of the wide transition. A firm heel supports the presence of the bowl, and the bowl itself features rather stout walls that taper slightly as they reach for a chamfered rim. Said bowl additionally takes on a dynamic bit of forward cant, subtly drawing the eye to the fore and emphasizing the presence of the bowl. The finish of the briar unveils a wealth of handsome grain throughout the composition, with flame through the flanks and dense birdseye across the heel.
